Bunting for sale on etsy.com!

Normally I just make bunting when I want to give it as a gift, or when someone places a custom order. But I've been working on getting some of my bunting pre-made so I can put it in my etsy shop: Ivy In Hawaii
I'm stoked to have my first two items ready to go!

It was really fun making designs the way I want to make them, and coming up with names that I felt described the design.
Now I just need to sell them. :) Click here to purchase.
More to come!

Vintage Industrial Chair - Before and After

I was about to get back in the car when out of the corner of my eye I saw this gorgeous ugly old industrial chair. I quickly grabbed it and turned it upside down to see exactly what I was about to get myself into. And boy, did I want to get into it. I yelled at sweetly asked the lady, "how much for this chair?" She said, "make me an offer." $3.00 later, the chair was loaded into the back of the car.

I was so eager to get to work on this piece, I didn't even get a "before" pic! It was just too easy to get the back off and begin the transformation.

I got a flathead screwdriver and a pair of pliers and started ripping the staples out and taking vinyl off.

I'm happy to say I bought my first staple gun for this project, and I love it so much that now I just keep looking around for things I can staple. I chose the smaller "hobby" gun, which is appropriate for reupholstering, and way easier for me to pull the trigger. With the big ones, I can never squeeze the trigger!

The vinyl pieces were used as the template for my fabric. I LOVE this diagonal striped fabric. I got it at the Maui Quilt Shop in Azeka's. Can you believe that "5-6-7-8" somehow made it into the project?!

I seriously can't believe how easy this was.
After removing the seat cushions, I sprayed the metal with a coat of Kilz primer, then 2 coats of mint/seafoam green, then a clear coat. I sprayed the screws with a coat of silver to make them look like new. The cushions just screwed back on.

I made sure not to paint over the original brand label - Cole. It says "Made in USA" underneath it.

I love her.
But I'm not keeping her.
She's for sale.

Owens & Co in Honolulu

Last month I had a gig in Honolulu at Hawaii Theatre, so I got to walk around Chinatown a little bit during my breaks. I ran across this little shop, which was ironically called Owens & Co! It was adorable. I knew I needed to take photos and blog about it. So I asked permission from the shop owner's sis, and got some eye candy for ya!

You walk in the store and see a tree branch chandelier, and right underneath is a myriad of useful trinkets and pretty things you tell yourself you "have to have."

Many of the products are locally made, like this display of succulents from Lanikai Pot and Plant. Aren't those anchors on the bottom left adorable?

They sell Noho (vintage Hawaiian Chic Home Decor) dish cloths. I bet if I had these, I would have an easier time wanting to dry my dishes. :) Check out Noho's etsy shop here. They have such cute stuff!

I was thisclose to buying one of these collars for Godiva, especially since she was hit by a car one week earlier and was at home recovering from serious injuries :(

I'm just in love with the way they displayed everything!

After himming and hawing for a good 10 minutes, I finally gave in and bought those notebooks below on the right. It's a 3-pack. It's helped me get back into journaling. I also got a thin rose gold pinky ring. It fits on my ring finger, haha.

Do you remember when I blogged about tassels a year ago? Haha, I had to take a picture of these tassels hanging from the tree, just because of my post. Again, everything is displayed so nicely!! Don't you love the yellow chevron curtains?!

Just love these Mahalo and Aloha cards!
It's the perfect non-cheesy Hawaiiana product!

Isn't this chalkboard and ladder display awesome?! Makes me want to go raid some school's old storage closet!

Jewelry display...

The clothing was a little pricey for me to try anything on, but I had to sneak a pic of this gorgeous dressing room. Made me want to change my whole home decor to greige and red with wood accents!

Oh how I wanted these catchalls...

They had a pretty neat shop front, right on the corner with those cool lamp posts. Perfect for when they're open on 1st Fridays!

If you are in the Chinatown Art District, go stop by!

DIY American Apparel Jersey T Dress

There's this dress/shirt/shift thing I love at American Apparel. I first discovered it back in 2005, when this other company had printed some reggae logo on the front and bob marley's picture on the back thigh. Needless to say, I never really liked rocking Bob that close to my buttocks (it was a short-lived phase) so I upcycled it a year ago and now it's an awesome Jack Johnson tank. (You can see the creation of that shirt here.)

In December I finally gave in an ordered a new one for myself directly from American Apparel. It's grey and I love it. Perfect for me to work in.  (That's me on the right... not the left).

Fine Jersey T Dress  - $27.00 - click here to go to the American Apparel website

Last month I was on Oahu and went in to the American Apparel store, but I didn't feel like coughing up $27.00 for another one. Then I thought, "I should just make one!" Lo and behold, I came across some jersey knit at the fabric store in a fun kelly green for like $3.99/yard- so inexpensive!!

1- I laid my American Apparel T dress on top of two layers of the jersey knit
2- pinned it to the jersey knit
3- cut around it, leaving about 1/4" excess
4- sew a seam at each shoulder and down each side (you don't hem the neckline, arm holes or bottom edge!)
5- cut off any excess fabric or any fabric that doesn't line up

Turn it right-side out, and that's it!

Sorry for the selfies, but I promised myself I would blog more, even if that means my photos aren't as good. I realized I wasn't blogging because my perfectionist self told itself that it could only blog with good photos!

Anyway... there was this rectangle fabric left over and it looked like it would be the perfect head band!

So I sewed it up and cut off the excess!

I probably wouldn't wear it together, because it's too matchy-matchy.
So of course, my mini-me, a.k.a. Ivy wanted her own green Jersey T dress :) I whipped it out in about 10 minutes-- headband and all. The photo shoot that ensued took longer than it took to make the dress.

Some reflection of this project:
-it's such a quick project!
-my jersey knit is slightly thinner than american apparel's
-jersey knit is extremely easy to work with - no fraying, so no extra hemming involved
-leave those raw edges alone and let 'em roll!
-back stitching was a little tricky - my machine wanted to eat the edge of the fabric
-i liked using a straight stitch and a zig-zag stitch

Get out there and make one! You won't be sorry!

Magic Eraser Toilet Bowl Pinterest Fail

So you know that pin that says,

"Did you know you can cut a piece off a magic eraser and put it in your toilet bowl overnight and it will remove the toilet bowl rings?!"

You haven't seen it? Well, click here.

I did it last night, and FAIL. It didn't work. After searching a few other pins, some of them are honest and say, "You will have to scrub a bit." Ummm... isn't that the whole point of a magic eraser? You use it like an eraser? The first pin promises to skip that step of having to erase! What a big fat pinterest liar! So, save yourself some time and just put some gloves on and wash your toilet bowl yourself.

Now, if only I could have back that minute of my life where I cut up my magic eraser and put it in the toilet bowl.

(Totally kidding and not at all bitter).

The Quest for Diaper Freedom

Ivy's been potty trained throughout the day since she was about 22 months old. (That was back in August 2011- almost 2 years ago.) Every kid (and parent) is different, but that is when I felt the time was right. My mom and I worked together to get it done, and here's what we did:

Day-Time Potty Training

1. Still wearing a diaper throughout the day, take it off and put her on the toilet every 30 minutes throughout her waking hours, whether she has to go potty or not. Do this for 2-3 days.

What To Expect:
She will still go to the bathroom in her diaper.
She will hopefully go sometimes on the toilet.
If she's going at all on the toilet, move to step 2 after 2-3 days.
If she's kicking and screaming about using the toilet, you can either wait a few more months to potty train, or use rewards. Rewards can include stickers, a skittle.

2. Put her in panties throughout the day, and continue to put her on the toilet every 30 minutes. (Leave her in a diaper for naps and at night.)

What To Expect:
Accidents - she will still go potty in her panties, so be prepared to do frequent clean up.
Don't get upset at her if she has an accident. Clean it up with joy in your heart!
Explain to her what she should do if she feels like she has to go potty.
It's probably a good idea to put her in a diaper if you're going out in public.
If you're seeing her potty more frequently in the toilet, move to the next step after 4-7 days.

3. Use panties throughout the day and on errands and, more or less, move on with your life!

What To Expect:
Remind her to use the bathroom.
She will still have some accidents - Ivy had them for about 2 months.
Try to keep her in panties if you're out in public, otherwise she'll get used to wearing a diaper all over again and get lazy and have more accidents.
Put a thick towel on the bottom of her car seat in case she has an accident.
You will have to wash out the car seat - multiple times.
Remember, clean up with joy in your heart!

Depending on the child, she may not need a diaper at nap time. You'll know this if she wakes up and her diaper is consistently dry. If your child is a 'wunderkind', she may not need a diaper at night either. Ivy was neither of these. We kept her in a diaper for naps for about 6 more months and then she was able to stay dry. However, she woke up every morning and her diaper was as full as can be. Here's what we did to try to remedy the night time. Unfortunately, it did not work for us, and we have yet to be free from diapers.

Night-Time Potty Training...FAIL

1. Limit liquids after 5:00pm.
Ivy wanted no part in this... and sneaks drinks up until bedtime.

2. Wake her up every 2-3 hours and sleep walk her to the potty.
Kit and I wanted no part in this step, and frequently slept through my alarms.
It was like having a newborn all over again.

3. Buy waterproof sheets and waterproof pads.
This should have been step #2.
We waited 2 months to do this and by that point
the mattress had been soiled over and over and
I washed sheets almost every day for 2 months straight.

What I Expected:
Ivy to start waking and going to the potty on her own.
Ivy to start waking up dry.
Neither of these things happened.

Last week, after being sleep-deprived for 2.5 months, I GAVE UP. I bought a pack of pull-ups (I had banned them from the house back in March to ensure success). I admitted to myself (and in effect, to her and Kit) that she just wasn't ready. I'm done acting like my child is like "every other child" who just wakes up dry on her own. Despite the fact that we had the perfect day-time potty-training experience, night time dry-ness just isn't for us right now.

You're welcome to try the above night-time steps, but before you reach ultimate frustration (and lose your joy due to sleeplessness and insane amounts of laundry) ask yourself:

"Is she ready for this?"
And more importantly,
"Am I ready for this?"

They grow up quickly. Maybe allowing pull-ups to stay in your house is not that bad. Especially when we all wake up with a full night's sleep. Best of luck!

Rebecca

I'm 30... Let's Party!

Welcome to Jed & Ivy's
Aloha Friday
Link Party #26!

It's a special one, cause today is my 30th birthday. I can't believe it. I've shed a few tears today because at random moments I keep thinking that my childhood is REALLY over now. (I don't know why the last 10 years somehow constitute a continuation of my childhood, but it keeps making me weepy.) Well, here's a few things I know, now that I'm 30:

1. Acne is not a symbol of one's youth. I still have it. It doesn't go away once you turn 20... or 30.
2. I won't always live paycheck to paycheck. With hard work and dedication, I am not a slave to debt and I actually have a savings account.
3. I only have one kid and a dog at this point in time, and I'm more than okay with that. 15 years ago, I envisioned my 30 year old self with 3 kids, a cat and a dog. Maybe some fish, too. OMG, I can't even imagine!
4. Life gets better after high school and college. No unnecessary early mornings. No tests or lengthy books to read. No pleasing instructors just to get a good grade. There is much more purpose in the real world than there is in that pseudo-world called "school." (However, I'm so very thankful for my B.A.)
5. Drinking lots of water, getting enough sleep and eating healthy food is essential for good health. No joke.
6. I'm still dancing!
7. My face moisturizer costs more than a plate lunch, and I order it online.
8. Stress makes you sick. Sick in more ways than you could imagine and in more ways than you care to experience.
9. It's ok to miss church or work when I'm sick. I don't need to feel guilty about it.
10. Parenting and marriage are the two most difficult activities I've ever participated in.
11. Parenting and marriage are the two most rewarding activities I've ever participated in.
12. I love driving an SUV.
